How to get rid of hyperpigmentation naturally?


Pigmentation can be of two types – Hypopigmentation and Hyperpigmentation. Hypopigmentation (a decrease in skin pigmentation) is a condition in which patches of skin become lighter or whiter in colour than the normal surrounding skin, while Hyperpigmentation is characterised by a darkening of an area of skin caused by the overproduction of pigment or melanin and is commonly known and usually a harmless condition. Pigmentation occurs in people of any gender, race and age.

Pigmentation is caused due to genetics, sun exposure, stress, hormonal changes during pregnancy or menopause, insulin resistance, damage to the skin due to injury or overly aggressive skin care treatment, or even the frequent use of hair dyes. Some people also suffer from post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, usually noticed after an acne breakout.

There are variety of treatments available to get rid of it, like you can visit your dermatologist for it’s eradication. However, if you intend to solve this problem naturally, given below are some of home remedies to deal with hyper-pigmentation.

Home Remedies for hyperpigmentation


Potatoes can lighten your pigmented areas and dark spots. Take a slice of potato and rub it on your skin daily.

Lemon with Honey

Take a few drops of honey and mix it with lemon. The natural bleach-lemon-and the organic honey has the qualities together with moisturizing properties. Please be careful that you are not using lemon on your sensitive skin.

Lemon Juice & Turmeric Powder

You can use the mixture of 1 tablespoon of turmeric and lemon juice and apply it on the affected area. Keep as it is for about 15 minutes. Now, wash your face off with the cold water. The best result will come if you can use this at night.

Milk and Honey

Apply a paste of milk and honey on the affected areas to safely eradicate hyper-pigmentation. You can also use curd on your face and other areas of your skin. Milk and curds contain lactic acid that peels off the old skin of affected areas over a certain periods of time. Also honey has many curative values that works wonders and is less messy remedy for hyper-pigmentation.

Vegetable Juices

Vegetable juices like tomato, potato, cucumber etc. can be applied on the skin to lighten up your pigmentation. These juices can also be applied on rest of your body to lighten up your complexion thoroughly.

This remedy is suitable for all skin types and can be used by everyone on a regular basis. Plus these juices also soothes the skin and make you look fresh all day long.


Avocados are immensely dense in vitamin E, you can make a paste of avocados by mashing it properly also add in milk to make a smooth paste. Apply this paste on affected areas to get positive results.


Almond are rich source of vitamin E, soak few almonds overnight and then form a paste of almonds with milk and apply it all over your face.

 Wear it for sometime and wash it off later to have a lighter and clearer skin. Having almonds daily can also help with hyper-pigmentation.

Red Onion

Red onion is one of the best homemade remedies to get rid you off from the pigmentation of skin, dark spots or dark circles. Make a slice of the onion and rub it on the affected area. You can use the onion juice alternative.


It is very helpful in reducing the skin pigmentation. Take 1 tablespoon of cucumber juice and 1 tablespoon of honey. Add 1 tablespoon of lemon juice for the best results.

Mint Leaves

Mint is an effective remedy for dark spots as it has very soothing and curing properties. Simply crush some mint leaves and make a paste with a dash of cold raw milk. Then apply it on the troubled skin to eliminate signs of hyper-pigmentation.

Tomato, Oatmeal & Yogurt

Squeeze a tomato and make some juice. Now, take 2 tablespoons of oatmeal and ½ tablespoons of yogurt. Then, apply it on the affected area. Wait, until the mask is dried. But be careful that it is not here for more than 20 minutes.  Use lukewarm water to wash it off.


It has the astringent properties that can lighten your skin. Take equal amount of vinegar and water together and then use it to rinse your face. You don’t need to wash your face after you rinse with this mixture.

Baking Soda

Baking soda has amazing exfoliant properties that can remove dead skin cells. Make paste of baking soda with water and massage it over your face for not more than half a minute. It will remove the dead skin cells and hence reduce the dark marks and blemishes.

Olive Oil

Olive oil has anti-inflammatory properties that makes it very effective remedy to treat hyper-pigmentation. You need to do light massage of olive oil on regular basis and taking steam after olive oil application can also help remove the impurities as well as dead skin, thus reducing hyper-pigmentation. Apart from the above mentioned remedies, you can also apply a good quality natural sunscreen lotion and avoid eating foods that are rich in sugar and fats as they may worsen the skin condition.
