South of Marivan defensive operation (July 20st, 1981)

iran- iraq war, soldier

Having failed to achieve their highly ambitious goals and had adopted defensive position in not so much appropriate terrains against Iranian positions, Iraqi had no choice but make limited attacks to prevent Iranians from getting prepared and taking the initiative.

They had some practical motivations for doing such actions in the northwest region such as supporting internal   anti-revolutionary members and the mercenaries who hindered Iranian forces integrity.

Iraqi units existing in the region on July21st, 1981 launched a rather extensive attack in the south of Marivan region; however after 48 hours of severe resistance by Iranian forces, they encountered a failure and had to withdraw.

-A large number of soldiers were killed or wounded and 65 were taken captive by Iran.

-Enemy’s attack was repelled and by accomplishing swift counterattacks the besieged villages of Shenam region were librated by Iran.
