Obesity, diabetes to form worlds biggest epidemic

Doctors and experts have warned that obesity and diabetes will become the biggest global epidemic in human history, Press TV reports.

Several experts from around the world gathered in Brussels to discuss the disease they call ‘diabesity’ and is caused by being obese and diabetic at the same time.

“You are seeing now that up to 60 to 70 percent of people in European and indeed many developing countries are rather obese or overweight. And some of the highest rates of type II diabetes are in developing countries up to 25 to 30 percent of the population,”‌ Paul Zimmet of Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute told Press TV.

Experts have predicted that by the year 2030, about 900 million people around the world will be suffering from diabetes.

“Numerically the combination of obesity and diabetes which we call diabesity is the biggest epidemic in human history,”‌ Zimmet said.

Doctors suggest several solutions that can help reduce the chance of obesity and prevent developing diabetes.

The first and the best solution is exercise. Researchers say over 60 percent of people do not get enough exercise, which can increase the risk of developing several illnesses.

Experts also warn about consuming high-calorie processed food that lack the healthy ingredients of the meals made at home.

Specialists also mention another factor that needs more attention.

“In some of the laboratory animal model studies what the mother eats during pregnancy can determine the outcome of what happens in the adult in terms of diabetes and obesity,”‌ Zimmet explained.

Besides health complications, diabetes and other chronic conditions also bring poverty, as the diseases are expensive to treat.
