1 in 5 us women a rape victim: study

About one in five American women has been a victim of rape or attempted rape at some point in her life, according to a new report.

In its latest report on sexual violence in the US, the Centers for Disease Control and prevention (CDC) disclosed that 18.3 percent of women had been raped at some point in their lives.

The study which included random telephone interviews with about 10,000 women across the US in 2010 showed that over half of the rape victims or 51.1 percent of them had been attacked by a current or former “intimate partner”‌ while 40.8 percent said been assaulted by an acquaintance.

The new study which also involved 7,400 men, moreover, uncovered that 24.3 percent of women and almost one in seven men had been a victim of severe physical violence at the hands of an intimate partner.

“It’s the first time we’ve had this kind of estimate”‌ on the prevalence of intimate partner violence, said Linda Degutis of the CDC.

However, some domestic violence experts didn’t find the figures surprising despite being higher than previous reports.

According to the CDC, 1.3 million women had been raped during the year preceding the survey while a Department of Justice crime survey for 2010 reported 188,380 rapes and sexual assaults for the same period.
