Yemenis rap silence on regime killings

mourners carry the body of a woman in taizz on saturday

Yemenis have taken to the streets across the country to condemn international community's silence on the crackdown by Ali Abdullah Saleh’s regime on peaceful protests, Press TV reports.

The demonstrators turned up in the capital Sana’a and the southern city of Taizz, which has been a focal point of confrontation between the outraged protesters and Saleh loyalists.

They condemned the regime’s killing on Friday of at least 18 civilians, among them women and children, during its shelling of Taizz’s residential areas.

Hundreds of people have been killed in the regime’s suppression of the country’s popular uprising, which started in late January.

Protesters have since then been calling for the government’s ouster and protested at widespread poverty and corruption in the country.

The protesters also want Saleh and other regime officials to stand trial for the bloodshed.
