Blueberries may inhibit obesity


A new study has showed that a group of compounds found in Blueberries may fight obesity by inhibiting the formation of fat in body tissues.

Researchers at Texas Woman’s University applied polyphenols from blueberries onto rat tissue samples to see whether the compounds would stop some cells from turning into fat storage cells.

According to the findings presented at the Experimental Biology meeting for the American Society for Nutrition in Washington, the cultures that received the highest dose of blueberry polyphenols reduced the fatty molecules in the tissues by 73 percent, while the lowest dose reduced fatty content by 27 percent.

Previous studies have showed that Polyphenols, found in high amounts in blueberries have a number of health benefits, including lowering a person’s risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes and high blood pressure.

Moreover, plant polyphenols fight the development of fat cell or adipogenesis, and also induce lipolysis, which is the breakdown of lipids (fat). However, the new study’s authors wanted to see if polyphenols could also inhibit obesity at a molecular stage.

The scientists noted that their study was just a lab research. “We still need to test this dose in humans, to make sure there are no adverse effects, and to see if the doses are as effective,” said Shiwani Moghe, the study author.

“This is a burgeoning area of research. Determining the best dose for humans will be important. The promise is there for blueberries to help reduce adipose (fat) tissue from forming in the body,” she added.
