Iran humanitarian aid reaches Somalia

iran humanitarian aid reaches somalia

Somali Minister for Women and Family Affairs Maryam Qasim Ahmed says Iran’s package of humanitarian assistance has reached the country’s capital, Mogadishu.

The Somali government distributed the aid among the displaced people of the capital, a Press TV correspondent in Mogadishu reported Monday.

The aid donated by the Iranian Red Crescent Society includes food, medicine and tents.

Ahmed expressed gratitude to the Iranian Red Crescent Society for the help, adding that Somalia will never forget anyone who helps it in this very difficult situation.

"The Iranian Red Crescent Society has vowed to continue assisting the Somali people and we welcome this brotherly offer," she said.

The Somali minister also called on the international community to increase its assistance to the war-weary African country.

The Islamic Republic has also promised other humanitarian aid packages in the coming weeks.

Somalia has long been suffering a state of chaos and unrelenting internal conflict against many rebel groups.

The African nation has been without an effective central government since Somali President Siad Barre was overthrown in 1991.
