The 24th edition of Iran’s International Film Festival for Children and Young Adults has kicked off in the country’s western city of Hamadan.

More than 60 Iranian animations as well as short and feature-length films will compete in the event’s national competition section while 200 productions from 32 countries will vie for this year’s awards in the international competition section.

The participating films will be screened in nine movie theaters in the city of Hamadan, 11 cinemas in other cities of the province and four movie theaters in the provinces of Kermanshah, Kurdistan and Ilam, IRIB reported.

Argentina, Austria, the US, Spain, Brazil, Sweden, France, India, Poland, Finland, Ukraine, the UK, Italy, Ireland, Bulgaria and Turkey are among the countries participating in the festival’s international competition section.

“Making films for children should be far from mistakes and indiscretion,” Iran’s Minister of Culture and Islamic Guidance Seyyed Muhammad Husseini said during the opening ceremony.

Husseini said one of the main characteristics of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was respecting children and paying special attention to them, urging cinema lovers and Iran’s Ministry of Education to support filmmakers for children.

Iran’s 2010 International Film Festival for Children and Young Adults will run until October 12, 2010.
