MS drug Cinnovex, produced four years ago for the first time in Iran, has received global accreditations and is now exported to Syria and Armenia.

"Apart from Syria and Armenia, other countries have also requested for Cinnovex [the Iran-made interferon beta 1] and certain other Iran-made medications,” said Mohammadreza Shanesaz, Drug Director General of Ministry of Health and Medical Education.

Shanesaz went on to say that the high quality and the low price of the Iran-made medications are the main factors which may turn Iran into one of the main exporters of pharmaceutical drugs in the region in the near future.

He added that the countries established after the collapse of the USSR, the Persian Gulf littoral states, the Middle East and in the Eastern Mediterranean Region countries (EMRO) are the main targets of Iran’s pharmaceutical exports.

"European countries will also become one of our clients," said Shanesaz, adding that pharmaceutical exports would account for about 30 percent of the foreign currency needed for importing medications in the near future.

Resigene, Cinnovex and Ziferon are different types of interferon beta 1, an effective drug in treating patients with multiple sclerosis (MS), which are produced in Iran.
