quake damages 700 homes in iran
At least 700 homes have been damaged in the moderate earthquake that jolted the southeastern Iranian province of Kerman, local officials say.

According to the Iranian Seismological Center, Saturday’s magnitude-5.8 quake hit the Bardsir region of Kerman at 11:22 a.m. local time (0652 GMT), near the town of Negar, injuring at least 170 people.

"Due to the (town’s) old and traditional [architectural] texture, today’s earthquake damaged about 700 homes," Negar Mayor Ali Reza Kazemi told IRNA.

Kazemi went on to note that the damage was not extensive and said authorities were inspecting nearby villages, which are believed to have suffered the most.

Less than 24 hours ago, another moderate earthquake rattled the city of Torbat-e Heydarieh in the northeastern Khorasan Razavi Province.

Torbat-e Heydarieh officials said 110 people were injured, most of whom were treated on the scene. According to the Iranian Red Crescent Society, only two have been hospitalized and one is in critical condition.

The natural disaster devastated some 16 villages.
