Israel cabinet to discuss expanding onslaught on Gaza: Reports

gaza

Israel’s secretive security cabinet is set to meet to discuss the option of expanding the Israeli ground offensive in the blockaded Gaza Strip, reports say.

An unnamed Israeli official said the meeting would be held on Friday behind closed doors, AP reported.

The cabinet might also discuss international efforts to broker a ceasefire in the coastal enclave.

The office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is yet to confirm the reports over the cabinet meeting.

Since July 8, Israeli warplanes have been pounding numerous sites in the Gaza Strip, demolishing houses and burying families in the rubble. Israeli tanks also began a ground offensive against the impoverished Palestinian land on July 17.

In response, Palestinian resistance fighters have continued to fire a barrage of rockets into the occupied Palestinian territories.

More than 800 Palestinians, including many women and children, have been killed so far in the Israeli attacks, with thousands more injured.

According to the Israeli regime, its military fatalities stand at 32, with one trooper missing. Hamas says the number is higher.

Top Hamas leader in Gaza Ismail Haniyeh has said the besieged Gaza Strip will become “a graveyard for Israeli soldiers,” who are committing crimes against the Palestinians.
