First cigarette determines addiction

cigarette

University of Western Ontario scientists have found that smoking even one cigarette is enough to addict some individuals to nicotine.

According to a study published in the Journal of Neuroscience, the levels of certain cerebral neurotransmitters explain an individual"s vulnerability to nicotine addiction.

Canadian scientists believe that stimulating certain receptors in the brain, decides whether the first exposure to nicotine will be enjoyable or repulsive.

The study showed that blocking the dopamine receptors in the brain, switches the persons feeling about nicotine from repulsive to rewarding.

Scientists are optimistic that these findings will lead to the discovery of new treatments for nicotine withdrawal.
