Science offers new hope for the obese

device

Scientists report that a new implantable device, which blocks stomach vagal nerves, has shown promising results in treating obesity.

According to a new study published in the journal Surgery, VBLOC therapy can help patients lose an average of 15 percent of their excess weight.

The lead wires of the device, developed by Mayo Clinic and EnteroMedics Inc., are implanted in the abdomen laparoscopically with electrodes attached to the vagal nerves and the neuroregulator, which is implanted under the skin.

The patient can switch the VBLOC device on when the system is worn during the daytime in order to block the signals influencing stomach functions and the food digestion process.

Scientists claim that the device emits high-frequency electricity to block the nerve impulses between the brain, the stomach and pancreas and therefore causes obese individuals to feel full after a normal-sized meal.

They conclude that VBLOC therapy is not only a less invasive alternative to bariatric surgery, it is also reversible and can be removed if desired, as it does not damage or permanently affect the vagal nerves or digestive system.
