Overnight contacts up eye infection?

Contants

Aussie scientists claim that a new contact lens designed for overnight use does not make their users more prone to eye infections.

Previous reports had stated that wearing contacts at night compromises the cornea's natural defensive barrier to microbial infections.

The study reported a dramatic epithelial thinning in the centre and thickening in the mid-peripheral region of the outermost layer of the cornea following the use of these contacts.

Vision Cooperative Research Centre scientists claimed that the corneal defenses remain intact despite the changes in the corneal tissue.

Orthokeratology (OK) lenses are purposely designed to reshape the corneal surface while the patient sleeps. As a result, the patient experiences a clearer vision without the need for glasses or contacts after waking up in the morning.
