US, Iraqi forces arrest 322 people

Iraqi Friday Prayers

The US and Iraqi forces have arrested at least 322 people during a wide-scale raid in Baghdad's Sadr city, violating the fragile truce.

"Some of the detainees are pedestrians, some were trying to perform the Friday prayer, and others are owners of nearby stores," Maha al-Douri, a Sadrist lawmaker, said about the raid in al-Amel neighborhood in western Baghdad.

Three unidentified bodies, two men and a woman were also found and 16 people were detained in the northern parts, the official spokesman for the Baghdad's operations said.

In other news, a security source in northern Salahuddin province said that 150 gunmen surrendered to the local authorities on Friday.

General Qassem Atta, the spokesman for the security plan of imposing the law, refused to comment on the recent raids. Atta said he will release statements in the coming few hours.

Sadr movement officials in both Basra and Sadr City said Friday that they were abiding by the cease-fires, but the shooting in the southern city angered Moqtada al-Sadr's followers throughout southern Iraq and in Baghdad.
