The US President George W. Bush has declared that his country is prepared to strengthen the Lebanese army so it could disarm Hezbollah.

Speaking to BBC's Arabic television, he said the success of the Lebanese government in ongoing clashes was important for peace in the Middle East.

"I don't see how you can have a society with Hezbollah armed up the way they are," the US president said.

"In this case though, they moved against the Lebanese people, they're not moving against any foreign country, they're moving against the Lebanese people and it should send a signal to everybody that they're a destabilizing force," President Bush added.

"The first step of course is to make sure that the Siniora government has got the capacity to respond with a military that's effective," he said.

The interview took place ahead of Bush's upcoming visit to the Middle East. He is scheduled to arrive in Israel on Wednesday and will later visit Saudi Arabia and Egypt.
