Red fish, symbol of Nowrouz

Little red fishes are seen all over Iran as the Iranian New Year approaches. It has been many years since these lovely little fishes have become symbol of the Iranian New Year or Nowrouz.

Have you ever wondered how do all these fishes suddenly appear in the the shops and houses?

These beautiful little creatures are reproduded in special fish breeding pools during the year. 10 to 100 fishes are bred in each pool.

Gilan and Isfahan Provinces are two major fish breeding centers from which millions of fish are transported to different cities in special tankers, trucks or vans.

People buy red fishes more than other colors. Fishes have their own wonderful world. They are shocked by loud noises. Their jug shouldn't be snapped hard because they might suffer a stroke.

If kept in good condition, red fish can live up to ten or twenty years. They can grow by 3 to 40 centimeters.

They can move more easily and get more Oxygen in bigger tanks. The water must be changed once every four days. If using plumbing water it's better to wait 24 hours for the chloride to decrease.

The best temperature for keeping fish is 10-20 degrees centigrade. Fishes usually eat ground wheat, barley and soya.

If we take care of our little guests properly, they can be with us for a long time.
