Chapter List

Chapter 38: The Publishing Environment
Chapter 39: Layout Theory and Practice
Chapter 40: Typography Theory and Practice
Chapter 41: Using Special Characters
Chapter 42: Color Fundamentals

Part Overview

It may seem strange to put the chapters that explain fundamental publishing theory and practice at the end of a book on publishing, but this lets experienced publishing users — whether experienced with InDesign or not — jump right into the program while letting new publishing users get all the background they need collected in one place.

In this part, I cover the fundamentals of publishing as an art and as a practice: what tools you need on your desktop, how to put together layouts, how to use typography and work with fonts, how to use and apply special symbols and international characters, and how to understand color theory so you can work with publishing's specific color specifications and tools.

Although aimed at those not highly experienced in desktop publishing, the five chapters in this part are also great refreshers for experienced designers for whom a refresher on some of the underlying principles may stimulate new ideas.
