Terrorists Calculations Turned Into Miscalculation
In an interview with the Tebyan, Dr. Seyed Hadi Seyed Afqahi elaborates on Middle East issues. He discusses the role of the United States and Zionist regime and their allies in setting the stage for bloody events in the Middle East.
On the fall of terrorism Afqahi maintains that domestic and foreign factors are at work. “A country like the Islamic Republic of Iran has experience of fighting terrorism inside the country like the MKO and Leftist groups. Today, however, there is nothing like international terrorism and the Islamic Republic of Iran has no direct confrontation with terrorism. Iran supports the people of the region and their security and it has always tried to support the people of Syria and Lebanon due to its pivotal role in the region. Countries supporting terrorism do not seek a defined goal and they do not have shared goals. Terrorism inside the country has serious calculations but the calculations of the terrorists themselves are wrong. For instance, when ISIL captured Mosul and announced establishment of the so-called Islamic State and advanced to capture the provinces of Al-Anwar and Diyala, it had in mind to capture other Iraqi provinces within a couple of weeks and then advance toward majority Shia provinces, and finally attack neighboring countries.”
What seriously rendered their calculation useless was the Islamic leadership in Iraq, notably that of Grand Ayatollah Sistani and other religious authorities in Iran. Also, according to a military and security pact between Iran and Iraq, the Islamic Republic of Iran supported Sunni and Shia people of Iraq through its advisors in their fight against terrorism. This brought about establishment of Iraqi popular front against ISIL terrorists and alliance among the tribes who had been deceived in the early days of upheavals in Iraq by the Arab and Western media. Iran’s efforts promoted their awareness on the nature and crimes of the ISIL and they came to know ISIL’s claim on taking back the rights of Sunni Muslims from Shia Muslims was a sheer lie.
