The ongoing visit by the European Union’s (EU) foreign policy chief, Catherine Ashton, to Iran can positively impact the Iran’s nuclear negotiations with the world powers, an Iranian lawmaker says.

“The visit by EU foreign policy chief, Catherine Ashton, to Tehran can have a positive effect on the process of Iran’s nuclear talks and the promotion of our country’s relations with the Union,”‌ said Member of Iran’s Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Committee Ahmad Shohani on Saturday.

The lawmaker pointed to the recent visits by different European business and parliamentary delegations to Iran as another factor that can facilitate the process of the nuclear talks and the enhancement of relations between the Islamic Republic and the EU.

Ashton, heading a politico-economic delegation, arrived in Tehran on Saturday and was welcomed by Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs Abbas Araqchi at Mehrabad International Airport.

During her visit to Iran, Ashton is scheduled to meet with high-ranking Iranian officials, including President Hassan Rouhani, Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani.

Iran’s nuclear energy program and relations with the European Union top the agenda of Ashton’s trip.

The EU foreign policy chief will then visit the Iranian central city of Isfahan and leave the country on Monday.

Ashton’s trip comes upon a January invitation by the Iranian foreign minister.
