Love marriages not against Islam’

LAHORE

The Lahore High Court takes up at least one to two love-marriage cases as a matter of daily routine. In all such cases it has adopted a unanimous stance that marriage between two adults was their right, no matter if this brings them into conflict with society.

The learned judges have referred to various injunctions from the holy Quran and the Sunnah and inferred that the consent of a Wali (guardian) was not mandatory for a marriage contract between two adults.

Daily Times spoke to various religious scholars, lawyers, social workers and parents to seek their views on the issue of love-marriage.

Malaysia: Science and technology conference held

Kuala Lumpur,

The International Conference on Science and Technology has been held here, and the organizer was the International Islamic University.

One of those who addressed the conference, Mustafa Muhammad, chairman of the National Economy Reactivation Council, said that it is for the Muslim Ummah to put in place a plan for absorbing science and technology, adding that this could be done with the merger of the Islamic civilization with other civilizations that have made advances in this field.

He said that in the past the Muslims waiting for scientific discoveries and technological inventions to be made by others, and that was why they remained backward in these fields of human endeavor. The three-day conference is being attended by a coterie of science and technology experts, drawn from such countries as Sweden, Norway, Japan, Egypt, Bahrain, and Sudan.

Ivory Coast: Minister seeks improvement of Haj arrangements

Abidjan,

The Minister of Religious Affairs here is striving to improve the organization of those Ivorian nationals who wish to travel to the holy land for the performance of the annual pilgrimage, the Haj. The lack of systematic arrangements has been a perennial problem as far as African pilgrims are concerned, and they usually experience delays even in leaving for Makkah. The minister said he will seek solutions to the organizational problems facing the pilgrims from his country, adding that already sub-committees have been set up for the purpose: one for organizing medical services, the second one for arranging accommodation, the third one for transportation, and one for orientation about the rituals to be performed.
