West’s bid to isolate Iran will fail: Former Canadian envoy to Iran
Canada’s last Ambassador to Iran John Mundy says the West’s campaign to isolate Iran over its nuclear energy program is doomed to failure as Tehran is a key international player.
“I don’t think we can build a viable agreement with this country (Iran) based on isolating them. And they have shown they have enough power to exert tremendous influence over a whole bunch of countries (such as) Syria, Iraq or Afghanistan. Iran is a player,” Mundy said in a Thursday speech at the Royal United Services Institute in the Canadian city of Regina.
Mundy urged that a military confrontation with Iran should be avoided through negotiations which aim to “envisage an endgame that would be attractive to both sides.”
The United States, Israel and some of their allies have repeatedly accused Iran of pursuing non-civilian objectives in its nuclear energy program.
Iran has categorically rejected the allegation, arguing that as a committed signatory to the Non-Proliferation Treaty and a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency, it is entitled to develop and acquire nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.
Mundy, who was expelled from Iran in 2007 after diplomatic relations between the two countries strained, pointed out that Ottawa shouldn’t have severed its diplomatic ties with Iran as the measure sends the wrong signal to the international community that political dialogue with the Islamic Republic is “futile.”
On September 7, 2012, Canada announced that it is closing its embassy in Iran and asked the Iranian diplomats to leave the Canadian soil within five days. It has also frozen the bank accounts of many Iranian nationals living in Canada and banned money transfers to Iran.
It is widely believed that Canada’s abrupt decision to sever all ties with the Islamic Republic of Iran manifestly springs from a strong Zionist sway which has permeated the political structure of the country.
