The boundaries of happiness and joyfulness from the Islamic point of view

key to happiness

Bearing in mind the benefits of being happy and joyful, should one consider any limitation for the feeling of joyfulness? From the Islamic point of view, the principle of practicing control must be observed in all aspects of life. In other words, Islam negates an unbridled life that pursues no objective and invites all humans to a balanced and spiritual life within the framework of religion. There is no doubt that all people seek joyfulness and happiness but sometimes they may act in extreme manners. Nowadays, certain sins are committed in our celebrations such as backbiting, mockery, derogatory jokes as well as indecent music and dancing. Without these things, you get the feeling that the celebration is not a happy one. If one dares to hold a ceremony or celebration based on Islamic criteria, he will be considered as a reactionary and backward person. Even though feeling of joyfulness is one of the basic needs of every human being, Islam does not consider all kinds of joyfulness as being acceptable. Such unacceptable actions will cause internal grief and sorrow and will cause remorse in the hereafter. Any feeling of joyfulness which observes religious and Islamic principles is considered as acceptable feeling of joyfulness and happiness.

Imam Sadiq (Peace be upon him) has stated that exuberance and joyfulness is achieved when one feels certain and is satisfied with God’s wish and sorrow will result from doubts and displeasure over God’s commandments.
