Eating eggs at breakfast may help weight control

Eating eggs at breakfast is more effective than having cereals in delaying hunger pangs in overweight people, US researchers say.

A study of 20 overweight or obese volunteers demonstrated that those consuming an egg for breakfast, rather than cereals, felt less hungry at lunchtime, and ate less at an ‘all-you-can eat’ buffet.

Dr. Nikhil Dhurandhar and colleagues at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Louisiana also found that the egg-eating group had significantly lower levels of ghrelin, a hormone that stimulates appetite, in their blood three hours after breakfast.

The results presented at the European Congress on Obesity in Lyon, France, which was held in mid-May, also showed that overweight people consuming eggs had also significantly higher levels of another hormone, called PYY3-36, which signals the feeling of fullness

“This study shows that diets with higher protein quality may enhance satiety, leading to better compliance and success of a weight loss diet,”‌ said Dr. Dhurandhar.

He highlighted that eggs or other appetite suppressants are not magical weight loss solutions but they can only boost will power for those who are on a diet.

“They will feel full and that will help them stick to their diet and get better weight loss…. Eggs don’t have magic powers of cutting weight but they may just help you say ‘no’,”‌ added the lead author.
