Iran to join intl. Cospas-Sarsat system
Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has ordered the implementation of a law that allows the Islamic Republic to join the international Cospas-Sarsat search and rescue system.
According to the law, Iran will be permitted to register with the system and become a member of the international program, IRNA reported.
The Cospas-Sarsat system, which was established in 1979, uses satellites to detect and locate emergency beacons carried by ships, aircraft, or individuals.
Based in Montreal, Canada, Cospas-Sarsat also consists of a network of ground stations, mission control centers, and rescue coordination centers which provide a resource for protecting the lives of aviators and mariners worldwide.
