Qasr-e-Shirin Defensive Operation (September 22nd, 1980)

iran-iraq war

As some of its subordinate units were detached and were fighting the internal anti-revolutionary elements in the west and northwest regions of Iran, 81st division of I.R of Iran’s Army was gradually deployed and covered around 600 kilometers of borders  in  these regions, and based on the Aboozar operational plan prepared by I.R of Iran’s Army in June, 1980, was assigned to delay Iraqi aggressors' movements and defend against the   enemy through barrier positions. This mission was accomplished successfully and some combatants of Revolutionary Guard corps, local tribesmen, army aviation and Army’s airforce supported the defensive operation.

The enemy’s advances were stopped in the heights of Gavmishan, Koor-e-Moosh, Qaraviz, Bazideraz, Tang-e-Hajiyan, C’harmiyan. Darbaloot, Bansiran, Kal-e-joub. Sarat ha, Tang-e-Bijar, Tang-e-Bina, Zil and Konjancham. The aforementioned mission was done [under a situation that the decrease in personnel capacity resulting from the reduction of conscripts and the casualties due to the participation in Iran’s Internal Defense Development Operation was considerable.

Exploiting a armor division and a mountain infantry brigade, Iraq’s Army made its aggression in this region and did an effort to capture Iran’s territory up to Qasr-e-Shirin, Sarpol-e-Zahab and Gilan-e-Gharb and defend in advantageous positions; however, due to the attempts of courageous soldiers of I.R of Iran’s Army, just some parts of objectives were captured by Iraq and it couldn’t achieve all its pre-determined objectives.

Result:

-A tank battalion from armor 6th division of Iraq’s Army was destroyed up to 40 percent and the first battalion of 22nd brigade of Iraqi Kurdistan’s 8th infantry division suffered losses and casualties up to 20 percent. -Iraq captured Cities of Khosravi, Qasr-e-Shirin, some part of Dasht-e-Zahab, and the heights in Iran’s territory.
