Airstrike mistakenly kills 11 in Yemen

yemeni army soldiers patrol in a vehicle in the yemeni capital sana’a.

At least 10 pro-government tribesmen and a Yemeni officer have been killed after Yemeni warplanes “mistakenly” targeted their convoy in southern Yemen, says a Yemeni security official.

"The jet fighters mistakenly stroke a group of the army-backers armed tribesmen and soldiers in Hassan Valley about three kilometers southeast of Zinjibar, killing at least 10 tribesmen and Lieutenant Colonel Haidara Ali and injuring scores from both sides," the official told Xinhua on condition of anonymity on Friday.

The official added that three militants lost their lives and five others sustained injuries in similar air strikes on militant hideouts in Koud area near militant-held Zinjibar in Abyan Province.

The Yemeni army has intensified attacks on armed groups in the restive province since the militants took control of Zinjibar late in May.

Violence has gripped Yemen since late January when anti-government protests calling for an end to Yemen’s Ali Abdullah Saleh’s rule erupted.

Hundreds of people have been killed and many more injured in the Middle Eastern country as a result of the brutal crackdown on anti-government protests by military forces and bands of thugs loyal to Saleh.
