Iran celebrates registration of the Persian garden on World Heritage List
TEHRAN -- The registration of the Persian garden on the UNESCO’s World Heritage List was celebrated in a ceremony in the town of Mahan in Kerman Province on Thursday.
President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and number of cultural officials attend the ceremony held at the Shahzadeh Garden, which is one of the nine gardens UNESCO experts discussed to add the Persian garden to the list.
The Persian garden profile also includes the gardens of Pasargad and Eram in Fars Province, Pahlevanpur and Dowlatabad in Yazd Province, Fin and Chehel Sotun in Isfahan Province, Akbarieh in South Khorasan Province, Abbasabad in Mazandaran Province, and Shahzadeh Mahan (also known as Shazdeh) in Kerman Province.
The Persian garden was registered on UNESCO’s World Heritage List during the 35th session of the World Heritage Committee in Paris on June 27.
These gardens exemplify the diversity of Persian garden designs that evolved and adapted to different climatic conditions while retaining principles that have their roots in the times of Cyrus the Great, king of Persian from c. 558–529 BC.
Dating back to different periods, the gardens consist of buildings, pavilions and walls, as well as having sophisticated irrigation systems. They have influenced the art of garden design as far away as India and Spain.
Ahmadinejad also visited Ardebil last week to attend a ceremony celebrating the registration of the mausoleum of Sheikh Safi ad-Din Ardebili on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2010.
