Farhadi to shoot new film in Paris

iranian director asghar farhadi

Award-winning Iranian director Asghar Farhadi is planning to depict the love story between an Iranian girl and North African boy in his next film set in Paris.

“Asghar has just delivered a first draft of the script - which is quite brilliant - and is working on a second version now,” said producer of the film and Memento Films' co-head Alexandre Mallet-Guy.

Farhadi will shoot his next film in spring 2012 with Algerian actor Tahar Rahim in the lead role, ScreenDaily reported. The female lead has yet to be confirmed.

The Algerian-born French actor Tahar Rahim is best known for his performance as Malik El Djebena in Jacques Audiard’s Cannes Grand Prix winner A Prophet for which he received the 2010 Cesar Award for best male actor.

“It’s difficult to sum up the story in one line but like [Nader and Simin:] A Separation the story will be complex and involve lots of twists and turns,” said Mallet-Guy. “It will be shot mainly in English, broken English, and about 20 percent in French.”

Memento Films which handled both the international sales and French release of the Berlin Golden Bear winning Nader and Simin: A Separation will also handle international sales of Farhadi’s next production as well as its distribution in France.

The 39-year-old filmmaker has financed all his films through private investors so far, including Nader and Simin: A Separation which was made for less than €1.0 million and financed by a private Iranian bank.

The film has attracted some 400,000 entries in three weeks in France and is expected to exceed the 800,000 admissions mark.
