'Regional revolts anti-Israel tsunami' A top Iranian official has described recent uprisings in the Middle East and North Africa as a “political tsunami” against the Israeli regime. “The end product of the current uprisings is the formation of a new Middle East which will be more democratic compared to the past, and more resolute in opposing the Zionist regime (Israel),” said Hussein Amir-Abdollahian, director general of Iranian Foreign Ministry’s Persian Gulf and Middle East Department, quoted by IRNA on Tuesday. He also said the United States has been attempting to tip the regional balance of power in its own favor, but the Islamic Revolution of Iran has prompted such a deep impact on regional nations that Washington’s efforts in averting such developments proved to be futile. He added that hegemonic powers seek to dominate and hijack the waves of Islamic awakening in the region. “Some try to describe the regional developments as a continuation of the United States' Greater Middle East project while the recent events stemming from the uprisings in the region show this trend runs counter to the Greater Middle East plan,” noted Abdollahian. He said the regional uprisings share several key features, including the fact that this Islamic awakening has been inspired by the 1979 Islamic Revolution of Iran. In recent months, a wave of revolutions and anti-government uprisings has swept the Arab world. In January, a revolution in Tunisia ended the 23-year rule of former President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali. In February, another Arab revolution led to the ouster of former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak after three decades of authoritarian rule. Other revolutions have erupted in Libya, Yemen and Bahrain, while anti-government unrests have swept Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Oman, Kuwait and Algeria. Source: presstv.ir
