Iraqi security officials have said at least five people have been killed by gunmen in a house north of the Iraqi capital city of Baghdad.

According to AFP, police First Lieutenant Uday Sarhan said on Sunday the gunmen attacked the house of the bodyguard of the mayor of Tarmiyah, Adnan Hezbar.

Hezbar was a bodyguard for Jassim Mohammed Saleh, mayor of Tarmiyah, a town 45 km north of Baghdad.

Police also said that four women from the bodyguard’s family were among the victims.

The attackers destroyed the house with explosives after carrying out the shootings.

Also on Saturday, three people were killed and two others injured in separate bomb and gunfire attacks in Iraq's northern province of Kirkuk.

Bombing attacks and shootings have been intensified in Iraq since the beginning of the year.
