A commemoration ceremony has been held at the National Museum of Iran to mark the millennial anniversary of Ferdowsi's epic masterpiece Shahnameh.

The Shahnameh recounts the history of Persia, beginning with the creation of the world and the introduction of the arts of civilization to the Aryans and ends with the advent of Islam in Iran.

The masterpiece was listed on UNESCO's Memory of the World Register in 2007 and is housed in the library of Golestan Palace.

The copy reflects the aesthetic and literary values of the Timurid elite rulers in the 15th century.

The year 2010 was named the Shahnameh Millennium in UNESCO's 181st Summit.

Marking the occasion, numerous cultural events have been held worldwide, including a ceremony at Kabul University, Afghanistan, and several exhibitions at the Berlin Museum of Islamic Art and UK Fitzwilliam Museum.

Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, head of Cultural Heritage, Handcrafts and Tourism Organization, Hamid Baqa'i, head of National Museum of Iran, Azadeh Ardakani and a number of scholars and literati were present at the ceremony.
