Ahmadinejad: Dictated Proposals for N. Fuel Swap Unacceptable

ahmadinejad

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Wednesday underlined that the country is always open to negotiations for a nuclear fuel swap with the West, but would never allow any other country to dictate its views on Tehran.

"We have announced many times that we are ready for the fuel swap but its conditions and details should be agreed. The Iranian nation will never accept anything that a group wants to dictate," Ahmadinejad told reporters in a press conference in New York.

Iran has offered simultaneous fuel exchange within its territory and declared that it is ready to give 3.5% enriched uranium and receive 20% enriched fuel in exchange. The country has announced that it will agree with a nuclear fuel swap with the West provided that the exchange takes place inside its territory.

Noting that all Iran"s nuclear activities are under the supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), he reiterated, "The Islamic Republic of Iran has implemented all its undertakings but some people have certain expectations which are not possible. They want Iran to prove something which does not exist."

Elsewhere, he criticized the IAEA for its negligence towards the atomic programs of other countries, like the US, and said the Agency has not yet released even one single report on the United States" nuclear activities.

"How can you trust a country that after 60 years of covert (activities) now declares to be in possession of more than 5,000 (atomic) bombs?" Ahmadinejad asked.

The Obama Administration unveiled the total number of the nuclear warheads in the US stockpile during the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) Conference in New York, a number that had been classified for decades.

The US arsenal contains 5113 warheads, of which 1968 are strategic warheads deployed on long-range bombers or missiles. The rest are tactical weapons planned for battlefield use.
