Iran's Tafreshi receives the Lennart Nilsson Award
Iranian photographer, science journalist and amateur astronomer Babak Amir-Tafreshi has been granted the 2009 Lennart Nilsson Award.
The Lennart Nilsson Award recognizes extraordinary image makers in science.
Tafreshi received the award for ‘reclaiming a night sky that most modern people have lost, taking us to remote places where the stars still look like they did at the dawn of mankind.’
The 31-year-old Tafreshi is a member of the board of advisors of Astronomers without Borders and a project coordinator for the 2009 International Year of Astronomy.
His photographs have been published in international journals, on TV and on the NASA website, and have also been displayed in numerous international exhibitions.
Tafreshi is also the creator of TWAN (The World at Night), a project which invites photographers from around the world to capture images of the night sky.
American scientist Carolyn Porco was also awarded the Lennart Nilsson prize for ‘combining the finest techniques of planetary exploration and scientific research with aesthetic finesse and educational talent.’
Established in 1998, the annual Lennart Nilsson Award appreciates those who work ‘in the spirit of Lennart Nilsson [world-renowned Swedish photographer]’ and present science in beautiful and unique forms.
