Prophet Muhammad's emphasis on dialogue and reasoning: Part 1

the holy prophet (pbuh)

As the Almighty's Last and Greatest Messenger, entrusted with the universal message of Islam, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) preached peace and brotherhood through dialogue, reasoning and rational approach. These were the factors that led to the rapid spread of the message of monotheism and virtue in his lifetime in the Arabian Peninsula and beyond. In accordance with the commandments of God revealed through the verse of the holy Qur'an, he invited the Arab polytheists, and the Jews and Christians, as well as the Zoroastrians or Iran, to contemplate on the rationality of Islam and acknowledge it as the final and universal creed of mankind.

The Prophet’s politeness had a great impact on all those who came into contact with him. He used to say I have been raised to complete the best morals. His courteous behaviour and his modesty, in addition to his already famous reputation as Sadiq or Truthful, and Amin or Trustworthy, had an electrifying impact on the people of Mecca and Medina, in moulding their life as per the directives of the holy Qur'an.

Following his formal appointment as Prophet, he first invited his near relatives and members of the Quraysh tribe of Mecca for a special announcement, and after feeding them for three consecutive days said: If I were to tell you that an army is behind that mountain, would you believe me? They replied: We certainly believe in whatever you say, since we know that you have never said anything wrong or made any false claim. The Prophet then smiled, and said: O people God has ordered me to proclaim my mission as the Last Prophet, so for your own salvation, shun idolworship, and say, there is no god but Allah. What a wonderful way of logical discourse! The Prophet then said: the first one to believe in my mission and assist me will be my legatee, vicegerent, and caliph. The Arabs, however, became stunned and didn't know what to say. The only person who replied in the affirmative was the Prophet's hardly 10-year old cousin, Ali ibn Abi Taleb (A.S), who stood up, and said: I O Prophet of God. This event is known as the Invitation of Dhul-Ashira, since it involved clan members, and it is indicative of the fact that on the declaration of God's indivisible monotheism by the Prophet, the only one who publicly testified to his mission was his young cousin.

In other words, when we Muslims today say: "Ash-hado anna Muhammadan-Rasoul-Allah", we are actually following the remarkable precedent set for all time by Imam Ali (A.S), who was subsequently declared by the Prophet to be his assistant, legatee, vicegerent and caliph.
