Tazieh Registered

taziye

Tazieh or the passion play has been officially registered on the National Intangible Heritage List in a ceremony held in Tehran.

Literally meaning condolences, Tazieh is a traditional Persian passion play in which the story is presented in the form of musical drama, Presstv reported.

Traditional theater takes inspiration from historical and religious events. And the most favored performance pertains to events surrounding the martyrdom of Imam Hussein (as).

The theater has deep roots in Persian history and is aimed at promoting morality and spirituality. There are over 200 scripts in the Iranian repertoire focusing on one event: Ashura, the day related to the martyrdom of Imam Hussein (as), the son of Imam Ali (as) and grandson of Prophet Muhammed (PBUH) in 680 CE.

Tazieh is one of the few surviving forms of the popular Iranian theater also performed in other Muslim countries.

Iran’s Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts, and Tourism Organization has registered Tazieh on its National Heritage List and is preparing it for registration on the World Heritage List.
