Ali Akbar Velayati, the foreign policy adviser to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, met the crew of “The Ladder of the Sky” at its location for a second time in Tehran on December 20.

“The Ladder of the Sky” is a TV series on Ghiyath ad-Din Jamshid Masud al-Kashani (1380-1429), one the greatest Iranian mathematicians and astronomers in the Islamic world. The TV series is being directed by Mohammad-Hossein Latifi.

“The theme of the project is weighty and can become even more profound,” Velayati said during the visit.

“Undoubtedly, Ghiyath ad-Din was one of the few Iranian mathematicians of the Islamic world, whose works were unparalleled during his time… mathematics flourished through his efforts,” he added.

“We have in history when Omar Khayyam produced the Jalali calendar in Isfahan, he had about 100 assistants, but Ghiyath ad-Din made a major breakthrough in mathematics while he had no assistants,” he explained.

“Dramatic effects for their own sake should not spoil the scientific aspects of the project,” Velayati recommended.

“The subjects planned to be featured in the series should not be in conflict with basic scientific facts and the facts mentioned by Ghiyath ad-Din and his acquaintances, otherwise it will lead to objections by some people,” he added.

Velayati is one of the advisors to the project. Over the past few years, using official figures as advisors has become common among the Iranian cineastes producing TV projects. Such a trend seems to ease restrictions on screening the productions on TV, which is known as the “national medium” by Iranian officials.
