Sweet scents induce sweet dreams
German scientists have suggested that exposure to sweet scents at the time of sleep can help individuals have more pleasant dreams.
According to a study presented at the American Academy of Otolaryngology, while smelling the sweet scent of flowers at the time of sleep leads to pleasant dreams, unpleasant odors, such as the smell of rotten eggs, cause sleep uneasiness.
Findings revealed that the type of smell has a considerable influence on the emotional tone of sleep.
Scientists believe unlike other senses, the brain structures involved in smelling are always awake and therefore can transfer the stimuli to the limbic system which is also responsible for the emotional responses.
Previous studies had reported that other stimuli such as sound, pressure and vibration can alter the content and the emotional tone of dreams.
