Hezbollah: Stay away from network

Sheik Naim Qassem

Hezbollah deputy secretary general vows a tough resistance against any attempt to debilitate the movement's telecommunication network.

"Hezbollah will deal with those who interfere with the network as if they were Israeli spies,,,and they will face a ferocious resistance," Sheik Naim Qassem said Monday night.

He warned the Lebanese government against playing with fire and insisted the telecommunications network was 'identical' to Hezbollah arms and 'part of its security'.

He stressed the network was necessary for Hezbollah's deterrence capabilities in the fight against Israel.

Nabil Nicola, a parliamentarian from the Free Patriotic Movement of Michel Aoun, said Tuesday that a decision by Prime Minister Fouad Siniora's government to ban Hezbollah's communications network was 'a declaration of war'. It pushes the nation along an 'explosive path of no return', Nicola said.

Also on Tuesday, Lebanon's former premier Omar Karami said the majority's criticism of Hezbollah's network was 'part of the plan to finish off the resistance'.

Karami, talking to reporters after a meeting by members of the National gathering, said Siniora's government was carrying out orders issued by external forces'.

Hezbollah Secretary General Seyyed Hassan Nasrallah plans to respond to the Cabinet decision at a Thursday press conference, Hezbollah said in a statement.
