It is derived from the wordinfatarat in the first verse.Infitar is an infinitive which means to burst or split asunder, thereby implying that it is the Surah in which the splitting asunder of the sky has been mentioned.

This Surahandthe Surah Al-Takwircloselyresembleeachotherintheirsubjectmatter.This showsthatbothweresentdowninaboutthesameperiod.

Theme and Subject Matter

ItsthemeistheHereafter.Accordingtoatraditionrelatedin Musnad Ahmad, Tirmidhi, Ibn al-Mundhir, Tabarani, Hakimand Ibn Marduyah,ontheauthorityof Abdullahbin Umar,theHolyMessenger(uponwhombepeace)said:"Theonewho wantsthatheshouldseetheResurrectionDayasonewouldseeitwithone's eyes,shouldread Surah Al-Takwir, Surah Al-Infitarand Surah Al-Inshiqaq".

Inthis SurahfirsttheResurrectionDayhasbeen describedanditissaidthatwhenit occurs,everypersonwillseewhateverhehasdoneintheworld.Afterthis,manhasbeen askedtoponderthequestion:"Oman,whathas deludedyouintothinkingthattheGod,WhobroughtyouintobeingandbyWhosefavorandbountyyoupossessthefinestbody, limbsand featuresamongall creatures,isonlybountifulandnotjust?HisbeingbountifulandgenerousdoesnotmeanthatyoushouldbecomefearlessofHisjustice."Then,manhasbeen warned,soastosay:"Donotremaininvolvedinanymisunderstanding.Yourcompleterecordisbeingprepared.Therearetrustworthy writerswhoarewritingdownwhateveryoudo."Inconclusion,ithasbeenforcefully statedthattheDayofResurrectionwillsurelytakeplacewhentherighteousshallenjoyeverykindofblissinParadiseandthewickedshallbe punishedinHell.Onthatdaynooneshallavailanyoneanything.AllpowersofjudgmentshallbewithAllah.
