Educational System

In view of the diversity and multiplicity of fields in the higher educational system and in order to establish a general interconnection between different levels of education,Tarbiat Modares University, as a postgraduate school, awards Master’s and Doctorate degrees.

The educational system throughout the country as well as TMU is based on “unit” system, and credits are awarded on a semester basis. All applicants for the Master’s and Ph.D. degrees should pass the entrance examination, which is held annually.

Educational Regulations for the Master’s Degree

The purpose of this program is to enhance knowledge of students and to tran research specialists to be familiar with scientific research methods and to gradually develop scientific competency and essential skills for research and teaching. The requirements for admission to the Master’s Program are as follows:

a) Possessing a Bachelor’s Degree which should be acceptable and recognized by the Iranian Ministry of Science, Reseach and Technology or the Ministry of Health and Medical Training.

b) Meeting the general requirements for admission to the Master’s Program of TMU.

c) Obtaining acceptable grades at entrance examination.

The number of units required for the Master’s Degree is at Least 32.

Based upon the decision made by the departments, some courses may be required as prerequisites. All foreign students must pass certain Persian Language courses which are necessary for their stay and study inIran.

Students must attend all courses and other related educational and research activities.

Preparing the thesis is the final stage of the Master’s program, during which the student has to conduct research in his field of study under the supervision of a supervisor.

Evaluation of the thesis will be done by the Board of Examiners including the supervisor.

Educational Regulations for the Ph.D. Degree

The purpose of a Ph.D. course is to train students in specific scientific fields and make them familiar with advanced research methods in order to achieve new findings in the world of knowledge and enable them to extend the borders of knowledge.

The admission requirements for Ph.D. students are as follows:

a) Holding a Master’s degree which should be acceptable and recognized by either the Iranian Ministry of Science, Research and Technology or the Ministry of Health and Medical Training.

b) Meeting the general requirements for admission to the Ph.D. program at TMU.

c) Passing a foreign language exam.

d) Passing a specialized entrance exam for the Ph.D. program.

The Ph.D. Program is divided into two stages: an educational stage, and a research stage. The educational stage begins from the time a student is admitted to the program. Upon successful completion of educational courses and the subsequent comprehensive exam, the research stage will start. This stage will be finished by preparing a dissertation. The student who enrolls for a Ph.D. degree at the educational stage should pass between 42-50 units (depending on the field of study) A student who has passed all courses take in a comprehensive examination which is performed both in written and oral forms under the supervision of several faculty members.

Those who pass the comprehensive exam can enroll for the research stage and begin to prepare a dissertation.

The student together with his supervisor will determine the topic of his dissertation and have it approved by the research council of the faculty before the research begins.

The academic and research activities of the student in relation with preparing the dissertation should be under the supervision of a supervisor. The defense of the dissertation will be allowed after the student’s publishing at least one paper in certain scientific journals.

The dissertation will be finally evaluated and judged by the Board of the jurors.

Library & ScientificDocumentation Center

The library could claim to be the university’s collective memory. Its job is to retrieve and store recorded knowledge of all kinds, making it available and usable to students, researchers and academic staff.

As a student ofTarbiat Modares University, you will be one of the main users of the university library. It provides you with a place for self- study of specific subjects to cultivate general education.

The university’s library is comprised of the central library and a number of smaller at each faculty. These libraries have thousands of volumes of books in stock and grow as hundreds of new books are added every year.

You will be able to borrow several books for a certain period of time.

The central library has several reading corners, all open to free use of students.

The reference corner is furnished with several thousands of fundamental reference books.

In addition, the central library receives more than 2000 periodicals, journals, newspapers, reports, pamphlets, CD- ROM databases, etc., as valuable scientific documents for advanced research furthermore, an online searching system, accessible from certain terminals in the library, gives comprehensive details.

Library staff is trained in all aspects of information skills, all the way from initial introduction to the library to advanced literature searching using CD- ROMS or network databases.

Computer & Information Services

The computer center of the university offers a wide range of computing facilities for all members of the university, to support research, teaching and administration. In addition, many departments have their own facilities for use by their staff and students. Different kinds of computers, including UNIX workstations, are linked by a campus network. The computers are used not only for technical applications, but also for word processing, database management, electronic mail, etc. The university network is also connected to the Internet and hence to other network services worldwide, including the worldwide web.

 Audio- Visual Services

A variety of supporting services for teaching and research in the university are available from the AV center. Students are able to benefit from various educational AV media such as videotapes, slides, overhead and computer based video- projectors.

Publication Center

The publication center of the university publishes works edited or translated by academic members. A scientific journal named “Modares JOURNAL” is published seasonally, for publication of papers resulted from research activities

Student Services

The university is equipped to assist students with welfare or in other issues which may arise in a student’s life. Many questions can readily be dealt with by a fellow students or an academic member or clerical staff member in the student affairs.

Accommodation

TMU owns several dormitories, some of which are located on and the others are out of the central campus. The majority of students are provided with accommodation services in different dormitories. The university also owns a high rise in northernTehran, as a residence for the academic staff. 

A guest- house for foreign lecturers, researchers and visitors is also located in this high rise.

Health Services

A comprehensive health service is provided by theMedical Center of the university. Counseling services and optional health checks are offered to the students with particular problems. All students are insured against accidents.

Food Services

The university restaurant which is open at lunch time, provides service to the students and staff during the semesters.

A small cafeteria provides cold meals and drinks. Dinner is also provided for all dormitories.

Sports and Recreation

Besides attending regular academic courses, students are encouraged to participate in various cultural and sports activities offered by the university. The university is fortunate to have facilities for such activities.

A multi- purpose indoor sports center, with a major hall marked for volleyball, basketball, badminton, tennis, etc., and minor halls for different kinds of sports such as judo, karate, wrestling, weight lifting, gymnastics, table tennis, etc. Several cultural, social and recreational programs are provided for students during their stay atTarbiat Modarres University.

International Exchange

Tarbiat Modares University promotes and develops various types of international exchange, such as the invitation of foreign students, visiting researchers and lecturers.

Meanwhile,Tarbiat Modares University sends academic staff members and Ph.D students abroad every year to promote their research and strengthen links of cooperation.

International Exchange Committee

The Committee was established to deliberate on international exchange programs among universities and research centers. The chairman of the committee is the Chancellor of the university.

The other members are: vice-chancellor for academic affairs, vice- chancellor for research, director of the international affairs and two academic staff members of the university.

Foreign Students

Tarbiat Modares University offers graduate courses of Master’s and Ph.D. degrees to foreign students. The requirements for participation in each course include course work for the prescribed period of time and the submission of a thesis or dissertation. Students of both degree levels must pass course examinations before their thesis or dissertation.
