Iran unveils biggest indigenous drone

iran unveiled its largest indigenous strategic drone dubbed fotros

Iran’s newest unmanned plane or drone was unveiled today, Monday, at a special ceremony attended by the Iranian Defense Minister, Brigadier General, Hossein Dehqan. According to IRIB World Service, Iran’s latest drone is called “Fotros”‌, an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) built entirely by Iranian scientists and engineers.

In his speech, unveiling the new drone, Defense Minister, Brigadier General, Hussein Dehqan said the aircraft has an operational range of up to 2000 kilometers, and is able to fly at an altitude of up to 25000 feet.  Defense Minister Dehqan also said the aircraft can fly for between 16 to 30 hours, without the need to refuel.

“Fotros”‌ is the largest Iranian drone ever made, and the aircraft has been manufactured by Iran’s Aerospace Organization, which is part of Iran’s Defense Ministry. This dual-purpose drone is capable of undertaking surveillance missions, and when the aircraft is equipped with surface-to-air missiles, it can be used for offensive military purposes.

In further remarks, Defense Minister Dehqan said “Fotros”‌ can be used to take high-precision aerial photographs, it can monitor traffic along roads and highways, it can monitor oil and gas pipelines, it can keep a watchful eye over Iran’s sea and land borders. The unmanned aircraft can be used to monitor areas affected by natural disasters, such as earthquakes and floods , and to direct help to those who are in need.
