Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) was established on24th November 1994. His Royal Highness the Pertuan Agung proclaimed the establishment of UMS under Section 6(1) of the Universities and University Colleges Act 1971.
This ninth university inMalaysia expanded rapidly since the early days of its inception. The management office started activities at the Ministry of Education, Kuala Lumpur later on shifted to Kota Kinabalu. Teaching and research commenced in 1995 in rented buildings. The physical development of permanent campus on 999 acre piece of land began in earnest in August 1995. The university's occupation of the permanent campus started in 1999 and completed in 2000. In the meantime, the government also granted approval to UMS to set up a branch campus in the Federal Territory of Labuan.
Years that followed the acquisition of building facilities for teaching and research have witnessed the emergence of an increasing number of schools, centres and units.

A glimpse at UMS history

A desire to have a university inSabah has not been materialized until the 24th of November 1994, when parliament assented to the establishment of Universiti Malaysia Sabah. In the initial stage, only three schools were started, namely theSchool of Science and Technology, theSchool of Business and Economics and theSchool ofSocial Sciences. Apart from that there was also a liberal studies centre, known as the Centre for the promotion of knowledge and Language Learning. The first academic year, which commenced in mid 1995, saw the enrolment of 205 undergraduates. The teaching staff comprised of 24 lecturers and the university's administration was managed by 13 administrative officers and 26 auxiliary staff. The UMS has until now made several accomplishments. Apart from the emergence of several new schools, i.e the School of Engineering and Information Technology, the School of Education and Social Development, the School of Psychology and Social Work, the School of Food and Nutritional Sciences, the School of International Tropical Forestry, the School of Art Studies, and also the two research institutes, namely the Tropical Biology and Conservation Institute and the Borneo Marine Research Institute. UMS also witnessed the building of it's main campus on 999 acres piece of land. The first phase of this on-going project has already seen the rise of the buildings complexes of the School of Science and Technology, the Centre for the Promotion of knowledge and Language Learning, the Central Lecture Halls, theSchool of Business and Economics, theAdministration Building, the Student Hostels, the Sports Complex and the PALAPES building. The recently completed UMS main campus was officiated by the Prime Minister of Malaysia, YAB Dato' Seri Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, on the 19th September 2000. The opening of the new branch campus atLabuan on2nd January 1999 is also historical landmark in charting the progress of UMS. Named the Labuan International Campus, it presently accommodates two schools, i.e Informatic Sciences and theSchool of International Business and Finance. The undergraduate population has reached a total of 7,416 students; whereas the number of academic staff is about 369 people. Although it is still in its incipient stage, thr university, nonetheless, has been able to produce its third group of graduates when 1,123 of them will be awarded their bachelor's degree and 1 Doctor of Philosophy.

Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) started its postgraduate studies programme in the academic year of 1995/1996. Throughout the years, UMS has made it compulsory to assign academic staff with PhD qualifications, and with vast experience in research and supervision to supervise its postgraduate students, as a means to ensure the quality of its postgraduate degrees. UMS offers postgraduate programmes in the fields considered to be the core disciplines in the University, in order to enable each scholar to apply his knowledge, potential and leadership in his chosen field.

These core disciplines are Science and Technology, Engineering and Information Technology, Tropical Biology and Conservation, Marine Resources, Social Sciences, Business and Economics, Psychology and Education. Albeit the limited number of academic staff, UMS strives to design the programmes offered in the Centre for Postgraduate Studies by preparing sophisticated learning and teaching facilities. At the same time, the small intake of students ensures good supervision at all levels of studies.
