Iran calls for serious G5+1 talk
Following the recent meeting between EU foreign policy chief and members of the 5+1 group of world powers to discuss the bloc’s future talks with Iran, Tehran has reiterated that only “serious talks” based on mutual respect will lead to success.
Insisting that the “threat and sanction approach” has been proved unproductive, Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokesman Abbas Araqchi said that the Islamic Republic has been a committed member of the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and will continue to abide by its commitments under the treaty’s framework.
He emphasized: “The only way to reach an understanding would be through serious talks based on goodwill and the approach of dialogue and cooperation.”
He then announced that the Islamic Republic plans to participate in future negotiations with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the 5+1 group - comprising the US, UK, France, China, and Russia plus Germany - backed by the national resolve which was manifest in the recent presidential election.
The Iranian official added that the Islamic Republic in turn expects the opposite sides “to adopt a constructive and cooperative approach as well and return to the negotiating table with goodwill.”
In a statement after meeting with top officials from the G5+1 in Brussels, European Union's Foreign Policy Chief Catherine Ashton expressed the eagerness of the 5+1 group to resume negotiations with Iran over its nuclear energy program "as soon as possible."
