Iran won’t let powers impose their will on ME countries: Iran FM

irans foreign minister ali akbar salehi

Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi says the Islamic Republic will not let countries with economic or military power to impose their will on the Middle East states.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran is trying to make these countries understand that they cannot do whatever they want in the area of international political developments and if they could once determine governments for other countries, that time was long past,”‌ Salehi said in an interview with IRNA on Friday.

The Iranian foreign minister noted that the Islamic Republic does not allow such erroneous trends to take shape outside the framework of international conventions, rules and concepts.

Salehi also referred to his meeting with Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu and Egyptian counterpart, Mohammed Kamel Amr, in the Egyptian capital Cairo on September 17, and noted that more than one meeting is required to resolve the situation in Syria.

During an emergency meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation in Mecca in mid-August, Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi put forward a proposal for the establishment of a “contact group,”‌ comprising Iran, Egypt, Turkey, and Saudi Arabia, to help resolve the Syrian crisis.

The Cairo meeting of the “contact group”‌ on Syria was held on Monday, September 17, about a week after preparatory talks in the Egyptian capital by lower-ranking officials from the four countries’ foreign ministries.
