Leader: Obama delusional to think Iranians will buckle under sanctions

leader of the islamic revolution ayatollah seyyed ali khamenei

Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei says US President Barack Obama is under an illusion in thinking that he can bring the Iranian nation to its knees through sanctions.

“The US president has said ... that he wants to bring the Iranian nation to its knees through sanctions, which reflects a continuation of [being under] a delusion in this regard,”‌ Ayatollah Khamenei said in a meeting with Head of the Assembly of Experts Muhammad Reza Mahdavi Kani and the body’s members on Thursday.

“The lingering of this illusion will deal a blow to the US officials and will lead their calculations to failure,”‌ the Leader further pointed out.

Ayatollah Khamenei also referred to the recent comment by Obama who said he is not thinking of a war with Iran, and noted, “This remark is a good one and is a sign of taking a distance from illusion.”‌

The Leader noted that the main goal of the anti-Iran camp during the past 33 years has been to drive a wedge between the Iranian nation and the Islamic establishment by imposing sanctions, especially by tightening the sanctions in a particular year.

However, the Leader added, everyone was witness to the fidelity of the Iranians to the Islamic establishment in the recent parliamentary elections last Friday.

“Although the Friday elections were those of the Majlis, every vote cast by the people was, in fact, a vote for the Islamic establishment, and the very high turnout at the ballot boxes, one of the highest in the past 23 years, demonstrates the people’s full trust in the Islamic establishment,”‌ the Leader said.

Ayatollah Khamenei emphasized that elections and popular votes underpin the framework of religious democracy, the main essence of which is Islam.

“Those who think that democracy has originated in the West are wrong, because, although democracies in the Islamic establishment and the West look the same, their origins are different,”‌ the Leader noted.

The frameworks of religious democracy are completely different from those of Western democracy, since the Western democracies are oppressive, the Leader said.

Criminalizing the denial or doubting the Holocaust myth in the West, and denying Muslims the right to protest against explicit insults to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), and banning hijab-wearing women from workplaces are the instances of the wrongful and oppressive frameworks of Western democracies, Ayatollah Khamenei pointed out.
