Iran remains prepared against US aggression

A senior Iranian commander says despite US President Barack Obama’s efforts to distance himself from the excessive warmongering rhetoric against Iran, Tehran remains fully alert over any US aggression.

The military always takes threats very seriously and remains completely prepared for any combat operations even if Obama announces that the US has no military option on the table against Iran, said Brigadier General Ahmad Reza Pourdastan, the commander of the Iranian Army’s Ground Forces on Wednesday.

His comments come on the heels of a White House news conference on Tuesday, during which Obama said that Washington would continue to explore diplomatic options to address Iran’s nuclear energy program.

“We have a window through which we can resolve this issue peacefully. We have put forward an international framework that is applying unprecedented pressure. The Iranians just stated that they are willing to return to the negotiating table. And we've got the opportunity, even as we maintain that pressure, to see how it plays out," Obama added.

Brig. Gen. Pourdastan further pointed out that after the US failure in Iraq and the spread of Islamic Awakening in the region, Washington was made to change its strategy.

The US deployed its forces in Kuwait and Afghanistan with the purpose of taking energy routes in the region under its own control, the Iranian commander noted.

It also built up its presence in India to bring China under its control because as an economic power, Beijing could boost its military might that would pose a danger to Washington, he added.

The United States and its European allies accuse Iran of pursuing military objectives in its nuclear energy program and have used this pretext to impose international and unilateral sanctions on the Islamic Republic. The US and Israel have also repeatedly threatened Iran with a military strike on its nuclear installations.

Iran has repeatedly refuted the Western allegations, arguing that, as a signatory to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), it is entitled to develop and acquire nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.

The agency has conducted numerous inspections of Iran's nuclear facilities, but has never found any evidence of diversion in the country's civilian nuclear energy program.
