earthquake

A powerful earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale has hit the central Chilean town of Concepcion, the United States Geological Survey says.

Monday's quake was centered 31 miles (50 kilometers) northwest of Concepcion, and at a shallow depth of 12.2 miles below the seabed in the Pacific Ocean.

The US Geological Service said the quake struck at 1:04 pm local time (1604 GMT) with a magnitude of 6.2 Chilean seismologists measured it as a less-powerful 5.8.

According to the Chilean national emergency office, there were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.

Chile's navy also announced that there is no danger of deadly tsunami like the kind that ravaged nearby coastal cities when an 8.8 magnitude earthquake devastated Chile in 2010.

The devastating earthquake that struck on Feb. 27, 2010, killed 524 and caused 31 disappearances, wrecking 220,000 homes and leaving USD 30 billion in damage.
