Artificial blood transfusion successful
Researchers at Pierre and Marie Curie University have successfully conducted the first transfusion of laboratory-grown blood pumped into human veins.
French researcher Luc Douay extracted blood stem cells from a volunteer’s bone marrow and grew the red blood cells, Popular Science reported.
He injected the cells back into the marrow donor’s body after they were cultured and after five days, 94 to 100 percent of the blood cells were normally circulating in the body.
The study indicated that the cells functioned just like normal blood cells, effectively carrying oxygen around the body.
The recent achievement reveals the possibility of an unlimited blood reserve which can provide red blood cells, helping patients especially in regions with high HIV infection rates such as Africa that have lower reserves of donor-worthy blood.
