The 1st International Nowruz Festival is slated to be held at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris to celebrate the upcoming Persian New Year.

Organized by ECO Cultural Institute (ECI), the event will showcase various artworks about the Persian New Year (Nowruz), and its traditional celebrations and rituals created by artists from across the world.

Some 30 countries have submitted about 4,000 works so far, including photographs, cartoons and posters.

The selection jury, comprised of master Iranian artists Seifollah Samadian, Kambiz Derambakhsh and Amrollah Farhadi, has selected 180 art pieces to be displayed during the festival.

Poland, Malaysia, the United States, Mexico, UK, Australia, Germany, Greece, Russia, Belgium, Iran, India, are among the participating countries.

Winner artists will be announced during an awards ceremony at the ECO Cultural Institute in Tehran in April, said ECI president Hojjatollah Ayyoubi.

The exhibited works will then be displayed during an exhibition in the Tajik capital city of Dushanbe.

The International Day of Nowruz was registered on the UNESCO List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity on February 23, 2010.

Nowruz, which coincides with the first day of spring on the solar calendar, is mostly celebrated in Iran, Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, India, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Pakistan, Turkey and Uzbekistan.

For Iranians, Nowruz is a celebration of renewal and change, a time to visit relatives and friends, and pay respect to senior family members.
